I have enjoyed making videos for our YouTube channel so we've decided to try something new...small clips of our week put together in one "Weekly Vlog" that will be published on Mondays. That's my plan anyway!

Celebrating our May birthday boys

Leo and Jeremiah both have birthdays in May...and this year it is right in the middle of chaos. We are getting so close on finishing our "long-term temporary" tiny house (well at least to the point where it is livable), finishing up our remaining school work, packing, etc etc.
A birthday party was not on my list, but Grandpa Mike and Grandma Peggy offered to host one. I'm so thankful! It was a fun day with great company and beautiful weather. Sweet memories :)

8 Krekes + 15 Chicks

I'm finally getting around to update the blog with sweet pictures of the new addition to our family...baby chickens! They are growing fast; I do believe they've nearly doubled in size since these photos.

Big Family, Tiny House

Since we shared our plans to live in a space under 500 square feet, we've naturally had a lot of questions about what that will look like. I just uploaded a video to our YouTube channel where we explain the plan and show the building that will be converted into our tiny home. For those who wanted to look up-close at the sketched plan, I've included them here...

A few notes:

The mudroom/laundry area will have a shorter ceiling in order to fit a loft above it that will be the "master bedroom" ;)  Many tiny houses use a ladder to access the loft space, but since we have so many small children we would really like to be able to squeeze in a small staircase instead (with a closet space underneath it).

I plan to have floor to ceiling shelving in the laundry room where we will store the majority of the clothing. We will also have pull out drawers under the bunk beds.

In the kids bedroom there will be two sets of 3-high bunk beds, and the kids will each have a locker for their things in the "hallway" outside their room.

Since we will have a storage unit on our property for things that we plan to save for the "someday big ole' farmhouse", I decided to use that space to house a toy rotation system. We'll just pull out one bin of toys at a time and then rotate it with a new one every couple weeks to keep things interesting. The shelves in the "dining room" will house both dishes/kitchen ware and homeschooling supplies. There will also be a big shelf in the living room for the tv, books, and additional school supplies.

I'm excited to see how the plan actually works, outside my head.  =)

A beginning

It has been a whirlwind of activity over here. Two days ago we closed on the 15.75 acres of land we will soon be moving to. What a crazy journey it was to get to this place. So many times it seemed that this property was completely out of our hands. We just surrendered the whole thing to God and prepared to move on in our search, when He unexpectedly led us right back there again. The property came back on the market, the details fell into place, and here we are.

Today after church we spent our first day there as a family. We brought along a picnic lunch and the makings to barbecue for dinner, and spent the day cutting away overgrowth and cleaning up trash. The property was a foreclosure and then sat empty for at least a year, so there is a lot of cleaning up to do!

The weather was just beautiful today, an unexpected treat in February, so we really enjoyed being outside all day.

We took some videos of the day, including one explaining our "tiny house" plans. Those will be up on our you tube channel soon! We could hardly contain our excitement. After thinking about this day for such a long time it finally came! The work has begun :)

Elsie does gymnastics

Elsie has been asking for months to "do gymnastics". A regular class is not a good fit for our family right now (and I honestly think she would lose interest over time), but we found a perfect solution. The local gym has Homeschooler Open Gym days, where kids can be led in a structured warm up then freely use the equipment to have fun doing gymnastics their own way.

Jason let the other kids hang out at his office while I took Elsie for her very own "gymnastics day". She had a lot of fun!

There are a few clips of her in this video...click here to see her in action.
